The project entitled “Expansion of the Rail Access in the Western Part of the Port of Gdynia – Redevelopment and Electrification” is a project of a strategic importance for the socio-economic development of the country and the region. It makes up a part of the public tasks.
The investment project in question is based on the expansion and modernisation of the railway lines leading to the gate of the intermodal container terminal, i.e., in particular, electrification of the railway, extension of the new sections of the railway tracks, and equipping them with an advanced traffic control system.
The planned investment is an answer to the growing dynamic of rail services. It is essential that new shunting and stabling railway tracks are built, and that the already existing trackage is modernised, including equipping it with the up-to-date railway traffic control system (SRK) and electrification. First of all, it will allow for the reduction of the usage of diesel locomotives which will have a significantly positive influence on the impact of the transport on the natural environment. Furthermore, it will allow to increase the potential number of the train compositions serviced daily at the intermodal terminal.
Trackage will be managed by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. and available for all interested rail carriers.
In general, the project will contribute to the intensification of the rail and intermodal transport in the Port of Gdynia. Development of the rail transport is one of the priorities in both Polish and European Union strategic studies. This investment is indirectly connected with both the TEN-T network and the short sea shipping. It will be compatible with other investments led by the Port of Gdynia Authority S.A.
The purpose of the project entitled “Expansion of the Rail Access in the Western Part of the Port of Gdynia – Redevelopment and Electrification” is to increase the rail traffic and its safety, as well as, to significantly decrease the exhaust emission to the environment. As a result, this means of transport will become more competitive in the cargo service of the port (reduced time of service). Redevelopment of the port trackage, electrification, and introduction of the system SRK, along with the railway infrastructure PKP PLK redeveloped according to the task “Improvement of the Rail Access to the Maritime Port of Gdynia” will ensure the increase in efficiency and complex rail access to the western part of the Port of Gdynia.
The project entitled “Expansion of the Rail Access in the Western Part of the Port of Gdynia – Redevelopment and Electrification” was referred to the financing from the EU funds.
The application for EU financing of the investment was submitted to the Centre for EU Transport Projects on the December 28, 2018.
Project was included on the “List of the Projects Funded in the Out-of-competition Mode for the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme 2014-2022” – project number 3.2-14.
On the July 17, 2019, Port of Gdynia Authority S.A. received a letter informing about the completion of the application assessment. The application was approved by the Project Evaluation Committee.
